This official Arsenal shirt was worn by Júlio Baptista for the Premier League win against Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium in December 2006.
Baptista started in attack and played 75 minutes before Robin van Persie replaced him, with Arsenal settling the game late on. Stains on the elbow mark a hard night’s work in Lancashire.
His season on loan from Real Madrid produced one of the great individual performances in Arsenal’s League Cup history. In January 2007 he scored four times in a 6-3 quarter-final win at Anfield, the first visiting player to score four there since 1946, and added two more in the semi-final against Tottenham as Arsenal reached the final.
“The Beast” scored 10 goals in 35 appearances in his one season in north London. From the collection of Lee McCulloch, who started for Wigan that night, this match-worn shirt belongs to the forward behind one of Arsenal’s most memorable nights at Anfield.
