This official Chelsea shirt was worn by Michael Essien, the number 5 who powered the Chelsea midfield for nine years.
Arriving from Lyon for a then club-record fee in August 2005, Essien won the Premier League in his first season. That was the same 2005/06 campaign in which academy midfielder Jimmy Smith, from whose collection this shirt comes, made his first-team debut.
Essien went on to score 25 goals in 256 appearances, and two of them, a long-range equaliser against Arsenal and a volley against Barcelona, were voted the club’s Goal of the Season. Supporters named him Player of the Year in 2007, the first African to win the award.
