C.R. Flamengo Auctions Unique Anti-Racist Jersey

At the end of last month, the Brazilian government introduced a new law aimed at combating racist abuse in soccer.

Named after Vini Jr., the 23-year-old Real Madrid winger who has recently been the target of bigoted chants from fans in La Liga, it requires stadiums to suspend play during matches if racism is reported on their premises.

Before signing with Real Madrid, Vini Jr. began his career at C.R Flamengo, joining the club’s academy when he was only nine years old. And while he may no longer wear Flamengo’s signature crimson-and-black stripes, the club has chosen to announce its full support for its former player by auctioning off a jersey (issued to fellow Brazilian Gabriel Barbosa in a 1-1 draw against Cruzeiro) with an anti-racist slogan emblazoned on the front: “Everyone with Vini Jr.”

This jersey is a unique piece of soccer memorabilia. In addition to bearing that historic and singular slogan, it has been autographed by Vini Jr. - the man for whom it was designed.
