UD Las Palmas and CD Tenerife united for La Palma!

There are many soccer matches that ignite strong passions among fans, and many of the sport’s greatest derbies are played in Spain. Real Madrid versus Barcelona is, of course, the most popular one, but some matches are just as important as El Clásico to local supporters. One of these matches is surely the Canary Islands Derby.

Usually played in the second or third tier of Spanish soccer, the Canary Islands Derby pits the archipelago’s biggest islands against each other in a thrilling spectacle that many consider one of the fiercest derbies in soccer. But today, UD Las Palmas and CD Tenerife are all about unity. To support their neighboring island of La Palma, the two clubs have both decided to contribute to efforts to help those affected by the volcanic eruption.

The proceeds raised by Los Canariones’ match against Ponferradina and by Chicharreros’ match against Almería will, in fact, be donated to the appropriate authorities in an effort to save lives and bring some peace to the disaster-hit island. Las Palmas has already managed to raise over 6,000, and you can still bid on the special CD Tenerife jerseys here!
