Translating to “freestyle wrestling,” lucha libre is not only Mexico’s premier form of entertainment, but the art form has also rooted itself in Mexican culture and become part of the country’s national identity!
Introduced during the early 20th century, lucha libre quickly gained popularity in Mexico due to the flamboyant personalities of the fighters and the sport’s incredibly entertaining nature. Nowadays, its influence can be felt throughout the world, with some of the biggest wrestling organizations, such as WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) and AEW (All Elite Wrestling), drawing inspiration from luchadores to shape their narratives.
