Shirt Stories: Thierry Henry, The King in His Prime

We’ve been in the game-worn jersey business for a while, but sometimes a jersey comes in that leaves us starry-eyed.

Back in 2002, Thierry Henry was at his scintillating best for Arsenal. Coming off a season in which the Gunners won the double, the Frenchman was one of the most feared strikers in world soccer.

So when we found out that a classic game-worn Arsenal Champions League jersey with Henry’s name and iconic No. 14 was included in the Jan Koller collection, we couldn’t wait to uncover its story.

Under the lights: Borussia Dortmund vs. Arsenal, UCL 02/03

Believe it or not, this game took place before the famous Yellow Wall even existed, but that didn’t make Westfalenstadion any easier of a place to visit in those days. 

The UCL was in a period that included not one but two group stages, and this was the clash between the giants of the group. 

Henry lined up alongside some Highbury icons that night: Patrick Vieira, Robert Pirès, Freddie Ljungberg, Ashley Cole et al. And it wasn’t long before the Frenchman – who would go on to finish as runner-up in the FIFA World Player of the Year award behind Zinedine Zidane – made his mark on the game.

There’s an air of inevitability when you see Henry standing there, trademark socks above the knee, lining up a free kick from 25 yards out.

His future teammate Jens Lehmann could only watch as the ball whipped over the wall – Koller included – and into the back of the net.

“The most beautiful in my collection”

Over 25 years later, Koller smiles as he remembers facing The King during his career.

“I played against him many times; it was always difficult... and he always scored!” Koller said, looking back on the Arsenal clash.

“Henry was a soccer legend of my time. I was so happy when we swapped jerseys because we were both strikers, and it’s usually difficult to swap at the end of the game.

“I remember I was standing next to him at the corner when the final whistle was blown. Right away I asked him to swap.”

For Koller – still Czechia’s all-time leading goal scorer – it was the perfect result. He picked up three points and the shirt of a fellow striker at the height of his powers.

“Because we won the game he was a little bit sad, so I’m happy he was willing to swap. This shirt, for me, is the most beautiful in my collection.”

Henry would go on to score seven times in the Champions League that season, including a hat trick at l'Olimpico against Roma.

Arsenal won the FA Cup later that season, with Henry turning in a man-of-the-match performance. The groundwork was laid for “The Invincibles” campaign the following season. 

This shirt itself? Iconic. The Champions League sleeve badge. The classic cut. The old-school name and numbering.

But add to that the fact that it was worn by Arsenal’s greatest-ever player during the peak of his career, and you’ve got an all-timer of a collector’s item.
