Botafogo debuts special-edition anti-racism uniforms for “Black Awareness Day”!
Published November 22, 2021
Last Sunday, Brazilian club Botafogo debuted its special “Black Consciousness Day” uniforms in its title-winning game against rival Brasil de Pelotas. Designed by Kappa, the so-called “Mantle of the Denouncement of Inequality” aims to raise awareness of racial inequalities in Brazil and the oppression of Black communities across the country.
To highlight the importance of these social issues, Kappa managed to transform Botafogo’s uniforms into visual symbols of racial disparity. The shirts feature a change in the composition of Botafogo’s traditional stripes, making the distribution of light and dark stripes uneven and giving the shirts a predominantly white coloring as a symbol of racial inequality and its consequences for the Black population.
Furthermore, the shirts include statistics linked to the consequences of racial discrimination in the country. Observers can see data such as “75%”, which represents the percentage of homicide victims who are Black, according to the Atlas of Violence by Ipea (Institute for Applied Economic Research).
These exclusive shirts are now being auctioned off on our platform, with the proceeds dedicated to supporting the efforts of the Observatory of Racial Discrimination in Football and its fight against racism in soccer.
