Help Beder Reframe The Narrative Around Mental Health
Published July 22, 2023
It’s a myth that admitting to suicidal thoughts increases the chance that a person will act on them.
Honest and open conversation actually makes a person more likely to recover from these thoughts, because it opens up the possibility that they may discover a new way of looking at their personal circumstances.
Tragically, this approach was not available to Beder Mirjan: a warm, sociable, and good-humored young man who took his own life in 2017, at the age of 18.
For his brother, Razzak, and their father, Yahan, Beder’s death was both a catalyst and a tragedy: the two men decided to start a charity committed to tackling the stigma surrounding mental health, in an effort to keep other people and other families from going through what they themselves had gone through. Named in tribute to Razzak’s brother, the charity has so far partnered with various leading mental health organizations across the UK. and seeks to combine the “specialist knowledge of Shout and Samaritans…” to shift the conversation around issues such as depression and suicidal ideation.
So if you notice that someone is suffering from depression or has confessed to suicidal thoughts - don't hesitate to start the conversation!
One of the ways that Beder promotes public awareness of mental health and suicide prevention strategies is through its soccer team, Beder F.C., which on August 20, 2023, will be facing off in a charity match against Team Harvey, a squad captained by British rapper MC Harvey and made up of numerous former Premier League players, such as Danny Simpson, Hayden Mullins, and Leroy Lita.
MatchWornShirt has worked with Beder in the past, and starting this weekend, we are once again helping it raise money: this time with an auction in which shirts signed by some of the most esteemed figures in soccer will be made available to bidders. Erling Haaland; Marcus Rashford; Harry Kane; David Beckham; Jordan Henderson - it’s truly touching to see how many big-name players have decided to contribute to the cause.
