In Memory of the Great Siniša Mihajlović
Published January 24, 2023
To honor the memory of football legend Siniša Mihajlović, Lazio and Bologna have decided to donate the proceeds from the auction of their game-worn and signed jerseys from their Coppa Italia match to the ADMO (Associazione Donatori Midollo Osseo) LAZIO, a bone marrow donor association in the Lazio region. Make a meaningful contribution and own a piece of Italian football history by participating in the auctions.
Born in 1969 in Vukovar to a Bosnian Serb father and a Croat mother, he was raised in Borovo Naselje, Croatia, during the era of the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia. Siniša began his football career with HNK Borovo, his hometown club. He quickly broke into the first team and was signed by Vojvodina at age 17. After catching the attention of Red Star Belgrade, he then joined Roma and continued his career in Italy with Sampdoria, Inter, and most notably, Lazio. After retiring as a player at Inter Milan at age 37, Siniša Mihajlović went on to become a successful coach, working in Italy, Serbia, and Portugal, with two notable stints as coach of Bologna.
In July 2019, he publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with acute leukemia, but he continued to coach Bologna despite his illness. Unfortunately, on December 16, 2022, Siniša passed away at the age of 53 due to complications related to his leukemia at a clinic in Rome.
Siniša was a vocal advocate for donating money and specific blood types to aid in the fight against leukemia. He would often say, “Donating costs nothing. In those two or three hours when you make this gesture, you feel no pain, you feel nothing. And while you are doing it, you know that if your bone marrow is a match, you can save their life.”
The Coppa Italia Round of 16 between Lazio and Bologna on January 19, 2023, was a special occasion for both teams to honor the memory of Siniša and raise awareness for the fight against leukemia. The proceeds from the teams’ game-worn and signed jerseys will go to ADMO LAZIO. The ADMO is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public on the significance of bone marrow stem cell donation and the potential for curing blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma through transplantation. The ADMO Lazio branch is part of the ADMO Federazione Italiana, which has a presence in all regions of Italy. Each region has its own recruitment centers and hospitals where individuals can join the national bone marrow donor registry.
Don't miss the opportunity to own a game-worn and signed jersey of your favorite player while supporting the fight against leukemia and honoring the memory of Siniša Mihajlović.
