This official Inter shirt was worn by Ronaldo for the UEFA Cup play-off against Bologna at San Siro in May 1999.
Ronaldo started the first leg and played the opening 45 minutes. The two-legged tie was held between Italy’s beaten Coppa Italia semi-finalists for a place in Europe. Four days earlier he had opened the scoring against the same opponents on the final day of the Serie A season.
The 1998/99 campaign was his first wearing Inter’s number 9, and he finished it as the club’s leading scorer for the second season running.
Ronaldo arrived in 1997 for a world-record fee and repaid it at once. He became the youngest player ever to win the Ballon d’Or, at 21, and scored in the 3-0 UEFA Cup final win over Lazio in Paris. He scored 59 goals in Nerazzurri colours, and this match-worn shirt belongs to the striker the world came to know as Il Fenomeno.
