PSV Triumphant in Johan Cruyff Shield

The Johan Cruijff Schaal is played annually by the winners of two trophies from the previous season—the KNVB Cup and the Eredivisie—which this time meant PSV Eindhoven facing Feyenoord at De Kuip.

What a match it was for PSV’s recent signing, Noa Lang! The Dutch international scored the winning goal in the 79th minute, firing from inside the box after getting on the end of a quick cross from Ismael Saibari. Until that moment, it was difficult to predict what the final result might be, since possession was fairly even and both teams had goals ruled offside (one of which, by Feyenoord winger Igor Paixão, was a brilliant shot that flew past PSV goalkeeper Walter Daniel Benítez so quickly that he did not have time to attempt a save).

This is the second year in a row that PSV has been victorious in the Johan Cruijff Schaal, and there could be no more fitting trophy to kick off the tenure of its new manager, Peter Bosz, who once described in an interview the enormous influence Cruijff had on his own strategic approach to soccer: “With some friends, we more or less wrote our own book. Every article, all of his (Cruijff’s) interviews were in there. We collected them and tried to organize them—this is for attacking, this is how you defend, this is tactical.”
